Tuckman’s Model for Nurturing a Team to High Performance

Teamwork cannot be turned on. It takes time for a new team to “warm up” and reach its full potential. Additionally, team members go through phases as strangers become partners.

Bruce Tuckman’s book Forming, Storming, Norming, and Parforming describes these phases. Once you understand Tuckman’s model, you will know how to help your new team become more effective. Let’s take a look at how.

What happens during Tuckman’s formative years?

It can take time for people to get to know their new colleagues and each other’s working styles.

What did Tuckman mean by Storming?

In the storming In the formative phase, people begin to push established boundaries. Conflict and friction can arise among team members as their true nature and preferred ways of working surface and clash with others.

At this stage, team members may question your authority, management style, and even the mission of the team. If left unchecked, this can lead to face-to-face confrontations and heightened online tensions.

If roles and responsibilities are not yet clear, individuals may begin to feel overwhelmed by their workload or frustrated with the lack of progress.

How do I identify the normalization phase?

Gradually, the group moves through the norming Stage. People begin to resolve their differences, appreciate each other’s strengths, and respect your authority as leader.

As they get to know each other better, team members feel more comfortable asking for help and providing constructive feedback. They share a stronger commitment to the team’s goals and should make good progress toward them.

What Does the Performing Stage Look Like?

Your team is streaming now.forming It will reach its full potential. With hard work and a structured process, your team is more likely to effectively achieve its goals.

What about Tuckman’s postponement (or mourning) phase?

Many teams reach this stage naturally. For example, a project is terminated, a permanent team is disbanded, or personnel are reassigned.

Those who like routine or have developed close relationships with their colleagues may find this time difficult.
